Mermaid and Child

We recently had a customer in the shop giving us grief because "It says in the bible that tattoos are forbidden". It reminded me of this letter from a couple of years ago. I needed a laugh:

On her radio show recently, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance.

The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative:

Dear Dr. Laura:

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination... End of debate.

I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Law and how to follow them.

1. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord - Lev.1:9. The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24. The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.

4. Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2. The passage clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination - Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev.19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev. 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

Your adoring fan,

Whackos

Haunted Costco?

Okay so how long has Costco in Danville, CA been haunted?  T and I were shopping yesterday and we saw at least 3 instances when the shopping carts just wandered away from their people. Seriously, a person would turn their back and the shopping cart would just roll down the aisle. I think they aren't level. But now my daughter thinks there are ghosts! Then we were in the business/paper aisle and the lights went out. Wierd. So we went to the next aisle and the lights flickered on and then back off again.  wtf?

Hey all, just wanna let the people who I haven't really been in contact with for awhile on here that it's TOTALLY NO offense, but I'm cutting down my friends list a little, I'm going to be posting some "friends only" stuff, and it seems like my friends list is a little big, with people I don't really even hear from anymore.  So if you are a long lost pal, and don't wanna be cut, but you've just been off the LJ lately, let me know.

Up to no good

Okay so let's just say, hypothetically you have a nativity scene in front of your fireplace that your daughter likes to play with, (it's got all these little Precious-moment type characters).  And, suppose maybe last year your daughter (or maybe you, but you would never cop to it) lost a couple of the little animals that went with it and wanted more.   So let's just say you went to the store and bought an inexpensive mini-nativity scene with animals in it so that your daughter could have more characters to play with.

Well...............if you got it home and discovered all the characters were glued in and you couldn't play with them, what would you do?

You would get a metal object to carve them out with so that you could play with them........DUH!

So, hypothetically speaking, if you accidently broke off the sacred virgin's head while cutting out a cute little sheep, would that be sinful?

I wonder what the penance would be.

Writer's Block: Prohibited

Today marks the passing of the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, which repealed Prohibition. It might seem crazy to us now, but alcohol was illegal in the U.S. for 13 years. What common vice do you think is most likely to be outlawed in the future?

View other answers

Sometimes I wonder if there will be another "Prohibition".  I know the most common answer to this question is "smoking", which does kill a lot of innocent non-smokers. But alcohol does too.  There may be another movement to make it illegal again.

All right......so today was all about getting in to "shopping mode".  Bed, Bath and Beyond, Toys R Us, and Target. Got my sister-in-law finished, a few small things for dd and then a few things for my friends and their kids. Also got one thing for dh out of the way.  He's tough to buy for. He always just goes out and buys whatever he wants, grrrrrr.

Mom bought rat-dog a new house. It's a portable house that folds down flat and has a handle. I LOVE IT. I'm going to put it up in place of her crate when we have company over, it looks much nicer than the big crate by the back door.

Daughter got her retainer yesterday! She's so funny, it's a huge adjustment for her and she can barely talk. She has to wear it for nearly a year,  and we've threatened her with everything from no DS to grounded for life if she loses them, so hopefully she'll keep them in her mouth at school.

It's been SUPER-foggy here. I LOVE LOVE LOVE the bay fog (as long as I don't have to drive to far in it). It makes Christmas lights look even more magical.

My friend [info]allstarmama  is having a "tackiest gift" exchange at her Christmas party in 2 weeks. It got me thinking...what was the tackiest gift I've ever recieved.  Usually I get some doozy's from grandparents with very...............um..............eccentric tastes. But I think the tackiest thing was a lighted bar sign "Bud Light" that dh's black sheep brother (he's WAY screwed up, we're pretty sure he's been in jail a few times for drugs or worse, he just vanishes for 6 or 7 years at a time) brought over a decade ago, unwrapped and all dusty.  It was just an odd gift because neither one of us had ever been beer drinkers. So now I'm asking............

What was the tackiest gift (in your opinion, of course) that you have ever received?

Okay so Thanksgiving was awesome, Grammy (my mom) went all out and made all the staple stuff and I brought salads and pie. There was this one fruit cocktail salad I made that will be in my brain forever. It looked innocent enough on the recipe page......lemon jello, crushed pinapple, whipped cream, fruit cocktail and marshmallows.

Well.

Safeway had some colored marshmallows on sale that were Christmas shapes (green trees and red stars), so I thought they would look cute in a jello salad. Then I decided since I wanted to put it in my pretty trifle bowl, that I would make a double amount of the dish so that it would fill the bowl.

Well.

Remember watching the original cartoon version of the Grinch and there were all of these brighly colored elaborate looking dishes on the table that were SO bright that you couldn't fathom what food could be that color?

Well..............I figured it out.

Whos eat Jello salad.  Lots and Lots and Lots of Jello/fruit salad with whipped cream in the recipe.
